Inclusion and empowerment champions Dipesh Sutariya and Shanti Raghavan

Ricky Carippa, MBA, JAGSoM

There are shining lights of optimism who work to build an inclusive society in a world that frequently ignores the potential and abilities of people with disabilities. The energetic co-founders of EnAble India, Shanti Raghavan, and Dipesh Sutariya, are among these supporters of empowerment. They have transformed the work landscape for people with disabilities via their relentless efforts, providing them with equal chances and a platform to succeed.

Shanti Raghavan and Dipesh Sutariya's journey is one of passion, empathy, and a shared will to dismantle obstacles and change lives. Their quest began in 1999 when they became aware of the talent and untapped potential in the community of people with disabilities. They set out to establish EnAble India because they had a strong confidence in everyone's potential, despite any physical or mental limitations.

EnAble India is a trailblazing company that serves as a link between employers and people with disabilities to ensure equal access to job opportunities. Shanti and Dipesh recognized that in order to bring about lasting change, it was important to address both cultural views and the actual obstacles that people with disabilities confront. By giving disabled people the essential skills, boosting their self-confidence, and fighting for their participation in the workforce, they set out on a mission to empower them.

Enable India's innovative training and job programs are one of its main initiatives. These programs offer specialized training modules that improve employability and cater to a wide spectrum of disabilities. EnAble India develops employment possibilities for people with disabilities through collaborations with businesses, promoting a work atmosphere that values diversity and promotes development.

Numerous success stories that have come out of EnAble India show the influence of Shanti and Dipesh's efforts. Formerly neglected and marginalized people are now self-assured professionals who constructively contribute to society. EnAble India has changed lives by utilizing technology and innovation, demonstrating that handicap is not a barrier to achievement.

Additionally, Shanti Raghavan and Dipesh Sutariya's efforts go beyond personal development. They have been at the forefront of pushing for legislation to make society more inclusive. Their resolute advocacy and unrelenting dedication have compelled organizations and policymakers to give priority to the needs and rights of people with disabilities.

The incredible accomplishments of Dipesh Sutariya and Shanti Raghavan serve as a reminder that true progress resides in embracing diversity and encouraging every person, regardless of their skills, as we commemorate their accomplishments. In addition to transforming the lives of people with disabilities, their persistent dedication to inclusivity has launched a movement that is changing how society views what is possible.

Shanti Raghavan and Dipesh Sutariya stand out as beacons of light in a world that frequently undervalues the potential of people with disabilities, demonstrating to us that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to succeed. Their inspiring journey continues to dismantle obstacles, spark change, and motivate all of us to create a more accepting and caring world.

“Inclusion is not about changing individuals with disabilities to fit into society; it’s about transforming society to embrace and empower every individual. Regardless of their abilities”- Shanti Raghavan

Learning how to Learn

Today, we have Dr. Thejus Kartha from INSOFE School of Data Sciences at Vijaybhoomi University.

Dr. Kartha teaches math and coding subjects at Vijaybhoomi University. He holds an integrated master's degree in chemistry and a PhD in computational chemistry.

Dr. Thejus Kartha, Visiting Faculty, INSOFE School of Data Science

How did you transition from chemistry to coding and data science?

Dr. Kartha: That's a question I often get asked. People find it surprising that I moved from chemistry to data science. However, computational chemistry, which was my focus during my PhD, involved using computers and coding rather than traditional laboratory work. This specialisation allowed me to develop strong coding skills, particularly in Python. I became proficient in dealing with servers and working in a server room-like environment. So, my interest and expertise in coding gradually grew alongside my chemistry background.

How do you merge your passion for chemistry with coding and data science?

Dr. Kartha: Chemistry is a vast field with various divisions, including organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry, and computational chemistry. Computational chemistry, in particular, doesn't involve traditional lab work. Instead, computational chemists focus on using computers for calculations and analysis related to atoms and molecules. This specialisation required strong coding skills, and that's how I delved deeper into coding and data science. It's a fusion of my chemistry background and my interest in computer-based analysis.

Learning how to learn seems to be a crucial skill you've acquired. Could you tell us more about that?

Dr. Kartha:  Learning how to learn has been instrumental in my journey. It's a skill I consider invaluable because it allows me to take up new subjects as a challenge and ensure I'm always ahead of my students. Every time I'm assigned a new topic to teach, I dive into it, spending hours to familiarise myself with the subject matter. This continuous learning process helps me stay on top of my game and provide the best education to my students.

How can an AI or data science student at this university pursue a career in computational chemistry or a related field?

Dr. Kartha: One possible path to enter the field of computational chemistry is by specialising in molecular docking, which is closely linked to AI. This area involves studying the interactions between large proteins, biomolecules, and drugs. Since modelling these interactions is challenging, building an AI model can be beneficial. Pharma companies, in particular, are often involved in molecular docking. Big names such as Novartis and Johnson & Johnson offer job opportunities for individuals skilled in statistical modelling, making it relatively easier for AI students to enter the computational side of the field. Additionally, companies working on advanced materials like batteries also present opportunities in this domain.

Thank you, Dr. Kartha, It was great talking to you!

Dr. Kartha: It was my pleasure. Thank you for having me.

Art Therapy Event Unleashes Inner Creativity

Dixit Soni, BBA JAGSoM

The campus recently witnessed a captivating Art Therapy session, led by the esteemed Mental Health professional, Ms. Mausam Nagda. The event, held in the Activity Room, aimed to provide students with a unique outlet for self-expression and healing.

The session commenced with an invigorating exercise that involved students walking and moving around the room, guided by Ms. Mausam. Participants were encouraged to explore various speeds, form pairs of different head counts, and even embody the essence of birds, water, and stones in their movements.

Following the dynamic warm-up, students gathered to engage in a guided visualisation exercise. Ms. Mausam skillfully guided the participants to imagine themselves as seeds, symbolising growth, resilience, and transformation. Through this exercise, students explored the challenges they faced and the relationships they built on their personal journey.

The highlight of the session was the opportunity to translate these introspective experiences into artwork. Each participant expressed their emotions and reflections on a canvas, allowing their inner creativity to flourish.

The Art Therapy event not only fostered self-discovery and emotional well-being but also provided a safe space for students to connect and support each other. The session left attendees feeling inspired and rejuvenated, reminding us all of the transformative power of art.

In a display of creativity and collaboration, students at VijayBhoomi University have embarked on a journey under the Big Sync Project. Under the Big Sync Project, the walls of the university are being transformed into vibrant canvases, showcasing the immense talent and imagination of the students.

These wall paintings, meticulously executed by the budding artists, breathe life into the campus environment, adding a dash of colour and inspiration to every corner. Each stroke of the brush tells a story, capturing the essence of diverse themes, ranging from environmental conservation and social justice to cultural heritage and personal growth.

The work on these wall paintings commences when the sun goes down. The students use tools like projectors, aligners and other painting aids in order to make the murals look as good as they can.
