Navigating Success: A Journey Through Entrepreneurship and Academia

Khushi Chowhan, B.Mus Production and Performance, TSM

In an exclusive interview with Mr. Partho Dasgupta, a distinguished academician and business communication expert, we delve into his illustrious journey that spans continents, industries, and diverse roles. With a career that stretches over three decades, Mr. Dasgupta shares his insights on entrepreneurship, the corporate world, and the importance of fostering entrepreneurial skills in the 21st century.

Partho Dasgupta,
Faculty, JAGSoM,
Vijaybhoomi University

Q: Can you walk us through your career journey, from your early days to your current role as an academician?

A: I graduated with dual degrees in Economics and Management from BITS Pilani in 1987. I embarked on a long tenure with Wipro, holding various leadership roles both in India and the US. Later, I moved on to work with companies like Microland and Dimension Data before becoming the Managing Director of NEC India. Following my corporate journey, I ventured into entrepreneurship and founded DigiCert Consulting. Parallelly, I began my academic career, initially as a guest faculty and gradually teaching multiple courses across two campuses.

Q: What valuable insights have you gained from your extensive experience in the corporate world and business development?

A: Amidst the whirlwind of roles and responsibilities, a paramount lesson has etched itself into my ethos – the power of audacious goals. Our visionary chairman, Azim Premji, once quipped, "If people are not laughing at your goals, they're too small." This principle has been a guiding star throughout my journey, propelling me to set goals that challenge and evolve. This philosophy isn't just limited to leadership positions but resonates across all spheres of professional and personal life.

Q: Is entrepreneurship a skill that should be considered a 21st-century necessity?

A: Undoubtedly, entrepreneurship has transcended its traditional boundaries to become a quintessential skill in the contemporary era. The landscape has evolved to embrace intrapreneurship, fostering entrepreneurial spirit within established organizations. The amalgamation of both entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial endeavours enriches ecosystems and propels growth, contributing significantly to the fabric of innovation.

Q: What advice would you give to young adults aspiring to build startups or businesses?

A: Allow me to distill my advice into a singular, unequivocal focus – prioritize revenue. Revenue attainment and subsequent scaling not only unravel solutions but offer a profound direction. Entrepreneurs, in their initial stages, ought to don the hat of a salesman, orchestrating an orchestrated symphony of roles and responsibilities. Revenue stands as an indomitable aspect that defies delegation, making it the central anchor for any CEO's endeavors.

Q: Could you highlight the importance of integrating entrepreneurial skills into the educational curriculum?

A: Integrating entrepreneurial skills into education is vital. It empowers students with essential traits like problem-solving, adaptability, and innovation. The startup culture in India has gained momentum, making entrepreneurial skills a crucial part of a student's toolkit for the future.
