How to discover yourself like Raj?

Mr. Raj Shamani’s family suffered a huge setback when his father was hit by a diabetic attack in 2013. Still in his teens, Mr. Shamani suddenly had to assume the financial responsibilities of his entire family. However, he took the challenge in his stride, discovered what he was naturally good at, and started out on his entrepreneurial journey at the young age of 16 years. His story is a stellar example of focusing on what you have and taking action to achieve what you want, rather than drowning in the shortcomings of life.

“I was not inclined towards education and had speech issues. Studying hard to get a job was out of the question. I just had one choice: to support my family financially. The only way I could do that was by starting a business.”

Self-admittedly, Mr. Shamani knew how to sell and build a network, and that’s what he did. He borrowed INR 10,000 from his father and joined his father’s struggling soap-making business. To learn soap making he drew from his father’s expertise and resources online and competed with big brands like Pril and Vim head-on.

Mr. Shamani never shied away from doing something different. He applied his own business acumen and innovated in sales strategy. For instance, unlike big brands which give detergent sachets for sampling, Mr. Shamani chose to give away free 500 ml bottles of his liquid detergent. This was a huge success and also gave him an important life lesson – “to give before you take”.

"By this time I had learned the lesson which is the reason for all the success I have which is to give. All I ever did before was ask and expect things to be handed to me without me giving them anything in return. Shamani industries started with the rule and I gave and gave."

Now 24 years, Mr. Raj Shamani is the youngest Indian to have spoken at the United Nations Assembly in Vienna and has given TEDx Talks and keynote speeches the world over. Today, his company has a turnover of over INR 200 crores.

The apprenticeships mostly follow an approach of training younger generations in a specific trade through on-the-job training. It may seem that apprenticeships are for days gone by, but that is not the case. Most Industries today still use apprenticeships to advance knowledge for young professionals, and the same is true for the tech industry.

It is easy to mistakenly think that an apprenticeship is the same as an internship. Internships are mainly for students who are looking to gain experience or see how they would enjoy a particular career. They are often unpaid and tasked with minimal duties in the company. The goal of an internship is to gain experience in a specific industry and see if it is something one could be doing full time by themselves. Internships have a set period of time that a student or recent graduate will work, usually lasting a semester.

On the other hand, an apprenticeship is targeted toward recent graduates who are looking for real-life experience in the industry. They are often paid for their work and are given important duties and tasks that impact the team. Apprentices usually have more responsibilities than a traditional interns. They also have the opportunity to make real contributions to the tech team. The goal of someone working in an apprenticeship is that afterward, they will be rewarded with a full-time position at the company. Furthermore, the length of apprenticeships can vary between companies, lasting from months to sometimes years. Thus, Apprenticeship will help the graduates to become industry ready and employable by having a curriculum where they can go for apprenticeship for at least two years to get the industry exposure.
